    Member Education Sessions

    NHRS offers retirement education sessions throughout the state for members who are not yet retired. During these general information programs, members of all ages and in various stages of their career will be provided with information about NHRS benefits, including an overview of NHRS as a defined benefit plan; service, early, disability, and vested deferred retirement; pre-retirement death benefits; benefit payment options; and other important information.

    Pre-selection of a Survivorship Option

    An important benefit that many members may be unaware of is the “pre-selection of survivorship” option, which allows retirement-eligible members to select a beneficiary(ies) to receive a lifetime pension if the member should die while in active, contributory service before filing a retirement application. The advantage of filing a pre-selection is that the benefit may be more financially advantageous to the beneficiary(ies) than the NHRS pre-retirement death benefit.

    Proudly Displaying Our Mission

    Rumor Mill: Earnable Compensation

    NHRS continues to receive periodic inquiries about a rumor that’s been circulating since 2011. The rumor is that members who were vested prior to January 1, 2012, have to retire by July 1, 2016, because certain end-of-career payouts will be excluded from the definition of Earnable Compensation after that date. THIS IS NOT TRUE.
