NHRS Retirees, Beneficiaries, and Members:

The New Hampshire Retirement System (NHRS) recently detected and blocked an unknown party’s multiple fraudulent attempts to change Electronic Direct Deposit information for five of our retirees and one beneficiary. The attempts were made via fax and NHRS staff quickly identified them as fraudulent through standard security protocols and no payments were diverted.

NHRS immediately contacted the retirees and beneficiary whose names were used on the faxed forms. There were also three other names who were not NHRS retirees, beneficiaries, or members.

We wish to emphasize that if you have not heard from us directly, you were not affected by this incident.

The incoming fax numbers are suspected to be spoofed robocalls pretending to be from two separate banking institutions that facilitate financial transactions through third-party affiliates. Spoofed robocalls are often used by fraudsters to steal people’s money or sensitive personal information.

NHRS quickly notified the state Attorney General’s Office and its Consumer Protection Bureau about the failed attempts and is fully cooperating with the appropriate authorities. NHRS also disseminated information about the illegal activity to our staff and is closely monitoring all means of communication with members, retirees, and employers of NHRS.

Based on our internal review, there is no evidence that existing retiree or active member accounts were compromised. We also found no evidence that the personal information used in the fraudulent attempts was obtained from the retirement system.

All of us at NHRS work continuously to strengthen the security of internal and external systems to proactively protect against fraudulent activity. Suspicious emails, voicemails, and other solicitations are an unfortunate reality, and knowledge is the best defense for your personal information and financial well-being. If you receive an unsolicited communication that purports to be from NHRS, please let us know by emailing public_relations@nhrs.org. Please do not use the reply function to let us know, even if the email appears to come from NHRS.

Members looking for information about NHRS benefits are encouraged to go directly to our website, www.nhrs.org, where we provide many ways for you to stay informed. Click here to review additional ways to safeguard your NHRS account.

NHRS provides retirement, disability, and death benefits to its eligible members and their beneficiaries. The State of New Hampshire and more than 470 local government employers participate in NHRS for their employees, teachers, firefighters, and police officers. NHRS has approximately 48,900 active members and 45,500 benefit recipients. NHRS administers a defined benefit plan qualified as a tax-exempt entity under sections 401(a) and 501(a) of the Internal Revenue Code.
